In 2010 the Festival raised over £5,000 for the community's Village Hall ensuring the essential upkeep for the Village Hall for another year. Big thanks must go to the many scarecrow makers, volunteers and visitors who help support this festival.

This years Wetwang Scarecrow Festival promises to be another cracker. They have some classes and categories for everyones enjoyment.

8 years ago the scarecrows arrived in Wetwang and the Village Hall Committee, as a fundraising activity for the newly-erected Wetwang Village Community Hall, decided to hold a festival. 8 years later it has grown to become the most important event in the villages calendar.

It isn't just a heap of scarecrows for you to look at, the enthusiastic residents will display them in gardens, open spaces, hidden corners and even on rooftops. In fact if you drive too slowly through the village, you may find one sneak into your car !!

Over 60 scarecrow graced last year’s festival and over 100 are expected for this years Wetwang Scarecrow Festival.

There appears to be no end to the creative talents of our scarecrow makers and their hiding places - and 2011 will surely see another imaginative bunch of inventions...

So why not pop in and help raise some much needed funds, even if it's just a quick visit on your way to the Yorkshire Seaside.

The word Bayle is derived from the French Baille meaning ‘enclosure’ or ‘ward’.

Recent archaeological surveys of the Bayle have concluded that a large proportion of the building dates to the late 12th Century. The initial use of the building is unclear although there is a possibility it may have been a gatehouse to a castle built by William le Gros after he took control of Bridlington Priory in 1143.

In the 14th Century the Bayle was the Gatehouse to Bridlington Priory, a porter lived inside the Bayle and monitored the comings and goings of the Priory. An Almoner also lived in the Bayle and distributed food and ale to the poor of Bridlington.

Since the dissolution of Bridlington Priory the Bayle has been used for many different purposes including a Prison, Court, School, Garrison, Non – Conformist meeting place, Town Hall and meeting room for the Lords Feoffees.

Today the Bayle is a Grade I listed Building and scheduled Ancient Monument, which makes it of great interest historically and architecturally.

The Lords Feoffees and Assistants of the Manor of Bridlington were created in 1636 when a group of townsmen purchased the Manor of Bridlington from Sir George Ramsey of Coldstream. The Lords Feoffees own the Bayle together with other property in the Manor and have been established as a charitable trust for over three hundred years.

The Augustinians, a distinguished antiquarian society, were formed in 1920 for ‘the purpose of collecting, recording and preserving the relics of Bridlington and District’.

In 1928 both organisations collaborated to form a Trust to manage the newly created Museum at the Bayle. Many local items have been generously donated or loaned to provide the detailed social history to the town and its people.

The Lords Feoffees became sole Trustees in 2000 and the following year instigated major refurbishment and appointed a Curator. Entrance fees are subsided to encourage local people and visitors to learn the fascinating history of the Bayle and Bridlington.

There are a wide variety of exhibits which include;

Bridlington Spa

The Victorian tourists visiting Bridlington needed entertainment and in 1896 the New Spa and Gardens were opened as part of a development by the Whitaker bros. The 5 acres included a theatre, concert hall, bandstand and refreshment rooms. In 1906 the original theatre was destroyed by fire. The current Bridlington Spa Theatre and Opera House, designed by W S Walker, was opened in 1907 and used to show that new invention, the cinematograph.

In 1914 East Riding of Yorkshire Council took a lease on the Bridlington Spa and in 1919 they purchased it. In 1925 the council replaced the last of the 1890's Spa with new Spa Royal Hall. Opened in 1926 and built at a cost of £50,000 it was a flagship art deco building. On the night of the 29th Jan 1932 it burnt down though fortunately the theatre was not badly damaged and able to reopen at Easter. In a remarkable feat of design and construction the current Royal Hall was designed by the borough architect Peter Newton and built in 52 days to re-open in July 1932.

Between the wars the Spa provided plays and variety in the Theatre and dancing in the Royal Hall. Herman Darewski was the well-known and very successful musical director at the Spa from 1924 to 1939. After the war the traditional holiday trade and entertainments continued but as the 60's dawned, the motorcar, increased wealth and the package tour brought about another set of changes. The British seaside resort was changing again, the Spa moved from weekly shows and the theatre and dances in the hall to a new broader base. The Royal Hall has been a feature of the British Rock circuit now for over 30 years with many famous artists playing it, while conference and association use of the facilities has increased to balance the decline in the more traditional entertainments.
