Hornsea Mere is generally described as the largest natural freshwater lake in Yorkshire and lies to the west of Hornsea. It covers an area of 467 acres (1.89 km2), is 2 miles (3.2 km) long, ¾ mile at its widest point and 12 feet (3.7 m) at its deepest point. It is a popular tourist attraction offering visitors rowing, sailing, boat trips and fishing.

It is also a Special Protection Area as a result of its shallowness that results in a diverse range of swamp and fen plants. It hosts many species of birds throughout the year and is of international importance for a migratory population of gadwall.

Hornsea Mere

Due to its closeness to the North Sea, the lake attracts a variety of wintering birds including gadwalls, goldeneyes, and tufted ducks.

The mere's reedbeds provide breeding sites for hundreds of pairs of reed warblers. It is also an important site for little gulls which congregate in large numbers in autumn.

The mere's reedswamps are of special interest with a number of scarce craneflies, dance-flies, snail-killing flies and moths.

Hornsea Museum was established in 1978. Sited in an 18th Century farmhouse and the two adjacent cottages, it is a registered charity, staffed mainly by volunteers.

Over the years Hornsea Museum has won numerous national awards and has been featured on television several times.

The museum is not a relic but a living entity, changing with time, to reflect the changing patterns of village life in North Holderness over the past centuries.

The purchase of the buildings and project costs were made possible by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Numerous hours of voluntary work spent on designing the exhibition and putting it together, especially by Stuart Walker and Carol Harker, has enabled this permanent exhibition to finally come to fruition.

From the pre-industrial age of the early 1700's through to post second World War Britain, the museum shows human evolution, warts and all!

Personalities, characters, tools, trades - all are presented in imaginative and informative displays accessible to old and young alike.

Hornsea Museum

Come and see how the family lived, worked and played here during the later Victorian era - Farmhouse kitchen, parlour, bedroom, dairy and wash-house. Outside there are craft workshops, a barn and a Victorian street scene. Also local history displays, Victorian School Room and the definitive collection of Hornsea Pottery. There is a great little shop and a relaxing garden.

The museum recently acquired an enormous amount of pottery, designs, manufacturing equipment and archive material following the closure of the world famous Hornsea Pottery in 2000. The material is of great importance and has been described by a national authority as one of the most complete records of a pottery in the UK.

In October 2008, the museum opened The Hornsea Pottery Exhibition Rooms in two former cottages at 15 and 17 Newbegin. This has enabled us to display a substantial and historical collection of more than 2000 pieces of Hornsea Pottery.

Honeysuckle Farm has been run by the Gardham family for generations now. The farm first opened its doors to the public way back in 1992 and they have been greeting visitors every year since. They have also expanded their range of facilities and attractions so that people can enjoy visiting a working family farm that has had to diversify to ensure its survival.

Many people visit every year and are now bringing the third generation of their family to visit. They are always happy to stop and talk to visitors about farming or anything in general really.

As well as the animals, they sell ice cream that is made freshly on the premises every day. The milk from the cows is placed in a pasteuriser and then combined with cream in a freezer unit and then sold straight to the public.

A waterfall and wishing well were created outside the Farm’s souvenir shop in the spring of 2008. This proved very popular with visitors and the wishing waterfall feature raised £479 for the NSPCC in 2008.

Visitors can also be taken around parts of the farm by horse drawn cart. Tommy, a 19 hand Shire horse, has this task, which he seems to love. Tommy is just one of the numerous animals at the farm, which include rabbits, pigs, guinea pigs, ferrets, goats, sheep and cows.

It's a great place to visit with lots to do and believe me, the kids will love it.
