Europe's largest open air theatre re-opens in grand style in the summer of 2010, the historic site situated on the Yorkshire coast in the beautiful town of Scarborough, will once again see the finest national and international line-up of acts performing. Featuring live music, opera, sporting events, family productions, comedy and much, much more.

Scarborough's Open Air Theatre is the largest in Europe (since Antiquity) and the original was built by Scarborough Corporation in the 1930s. The Lord Mayor of London opened the Open Air Theatre in Northstead Manor Gardens in 1932, and audiences flocked to see 'Merrie England', the first production to be staged at the outdoor venue.

The theatre itself was built on the site of Hodgson's Slack, taking advantage of ground contours which created a natural amphitheatre. The stage was (and still is) set on an island in the middle of a lake with fixed seating for the audience opposite. It was set out in five blocks with 5,876 seats, and the balance was made up with deck chairs. Folding seats for 6,000 plus have now been added to the new theatre's hard surfaced terracing.

Back in the 1930's when English seaside resorts were at their peak, the amphitheatre drew thousands each night, offering theatrical productions and lavish musicals on a scale that few of today's producers can even hope for. By 1952 the venue had attracted 1.5 million people, and the casts of performers alone could range up to 200.

The theatre enjoyed an amazing history with regular sell out events by Scarborough Operatic Society and musicals such as 'The King and I', 'Annie Get Your Gun' and 'Hiawatha', which saw native American warriors in canoes paddling on to the football pitch sized stage. During the summer season (a period of three months) two performances were held each week.

The much loved 'It's a Knockout' was held at the theatre every Wednesday over a period of eleven years and set an (unofficial) audience record of 11,000 for a free recording of the show in the 1960s.

Musicals ceased in 1968 after 'West Side Story' apart from a YMCA production in 1982. In 1977 the dressing rooms and stage set building on the island were demolished and the seating removed.

The last concert to be held at the Open Air Theatre before it closed in 1986 was James Last and His Orchestra. It is ironic that the company that presented this performance, Paul Gregg's Apollo Leisure Group, is the very same company which is operating the new Open Air Theatre today.

On this occasion they will be joined by the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards who are also celebrating their recent return from a six month operational tour of duty in Afghanistan where the two battalions served side by side.

This will be a unique opportunity to see both battalions parading in one town together. The parade led by the Heavy Cavalry and Cambrai Band will be one of the largest the town has seen, with an estimated 400 soldiers taking part. The parade is planned to start at 2.30pm and will march through town to the South Bay (full details of the route will be available nearer the event).

There will also be fun filled attractions to entertain the young and old alike taking place in Scarborough's South Bay including a tug of war competition, paintball range and climbing wall. There will also be a selection of military vehicles, weapons and exhibitions to inspect.

HMS Explorer, one of Yorkshire's Universities Royal Naval Unit training ships which has a specific role in providing training opportunities for midshipmen from Yorkshire's Universities of Hull, Bradford and Sheffield will also be taking part in the afternoon's activities.

The day's programme additionally includes a Spitfire display from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and The Band of Yorkshire Volunteers will be on hand to entertain the crowds. A large parade of Standards will head up a veterans parade and will be supported by local cadets and uniformed youth groups.

In addition to the main event on Saturday 26 June, a special flag raising ceremony will take place on Monday 21 June at Scarborough Town Hall to officially commence a week of celebrations in honour of the armed forces.

Other events planned for the week include an Armed Forces Day fundraising concert on Wednesday 23 June which is being organised by Scarborough Concert Orchestra and Scarborough College and a 'Party in the Park' which will be held on Sunday 27 June by the Friends of Peasholm Park in Peasholm Park, Scarborough.

Scarborough welcomes all veterans and serving troops and we are playing host to service families and their children by offering a range of complimentary activities, rides, rock and ices etc.

Scarborough is home to the Heroes Welcome scheme, which has now been launched nationally and supports Armed Forces personnel by giving discounts, service upgrades or special acknowledgement in various retail outlets and restaurants.

Anne Bronte's grave is situated in Scarborough - at the northern end of St. Mary's churchyard and is a very popular tourist attraction. Anne was the youngest of six children the most famous being sisters, Charlotte & Emily. Anne was born in the small village of Thornton, in West Yorkshire, on 17 January 1820. Shortly after Anne's birth, her father Reverend Patrick Bronte was made perpetual curate of Haworth - a small town seven miles away, and in April, the family moved into the Haworth Parsonage. This building was to become the Bronte family home for the rest of their lives. The following year, Mrs. Bronte was taken seriously ill with cancer and died in September aged just 38.

Anne Brontes Grave

In 1839, a year after leaving school, Anne set out to begin her first period of employment, where she was to become a governess with the Ingham family at Blake Hall, Mirfield. It was her time here that inspired one of her novels, Agnes Grey. She left the Ingham family after a year.

Her next post was as a governess to the children of the Reverend Edmund Robinson at Thorp Green - near York. This was about 40 miles from Haworth and the furthest any of the Brontes had worked away from home. Anne experienced home-sickness and depression during the five years she spent with the Robinsons, but there was one aspect of her position that was a sheer delight. She accompanied the family on their annual holidays to Scarborough. Between 1840 and 1844, she spent around five weeks each summer at the resort, and fell totally in love with the place.

In 1849, Anne became ill with consumption (commonly known as tuberculosis). The prognosis was not good and it was at this late stage in her life that she moved to Scarborough, in the hope that a change of location and the sea air would help her through her ill health. Unfortunately her illness had left her too weak to recover and at two o'clock in the afternoon of Whit Monday, 28 May 1849, Anne quietly died.

These walks will help you to enjoy one of the most beautiful parts of Scarborough Borough, letting you experience first hand, the wonderful flora and fauna, spectacular views of the coastline and countryside surrounding the woodland and quiet contemplations within the woodland scenery.

The walks are easy to follow and are waymarked in three different colours, orange, blue and green. They can be joined at any part of the route, depending on which car park you leave your car.

The Rowntree Trail takes you past Throxenby Mere and Raincliffe Meadow, which are just a couple of the great sights in this woodland.
The route takes approximately 2 hours to complete and the walk is quite strenuous and the route steep in places as it climbs to and from the top of the wood.

Each of the circular walks has a name, Rowntree, Graham and Wallis. These names are very important in the history of Raincliffe Woods and instrumental in preserving the woods as a place of beauty.

In the mid 1800's, Raincliffe Woods belonged to the Earl of Londesborough, and was part of a 2,508 acre sporting and agricultural estate known as the Raincliffe Estate.

Following the death of the Earl, the estate was put up for sale and was subsequently purchased by a West Riding timber merchant with the intention of clear felling the timber and selling off the land.

The pending destruction of Raincliffe so incensed a group of local business men, that in 1925 they, CC Graham, George Rowntree and Arnold Wallis formed 'The Trust' and bought the woodland back to ensure it's survival.

Please note, paths can be slippery and uneven in places, so please wear suitable footwear. The walks can be quite strenuous and the route is steep in places as it climbs to and from the top of the wood.

Eden Camp

At the beginning of 1942, a small contingent involving Army personnel, below the control of the Sergeant, emerged at Malton, midway between York and Scarborough in North Yorkshire. Their job was to build a barbed wire enclosure in addition to assemble tents to home the continual flow of enemy prisoners of war captured in North Africa. The site ended up being named Eden Camp and also the 1st inmates happened to be 250 Italian prisoners. These prisoners were put to work building a larger long term camp, consisting of forty five huts. The Italians had been at the Camp from 1942 to 1944, then the Germans through 1944 to 1948. Whilst at the Camp the prisoners labored on the local farms under the control of the War Agricultural Officer.

In 1986, local business man Stan Johnson found that POW Camp 83 seemed to be still generally in one piece and that thirty 5 of the original huts were in approximately the identical condition as once the last from the 1,200 inmates left with the 'Fatherland' in 1948. Mr Johnson purchased the site and initially invested £750,000 to create, inside the original Camp, the world's only Modern History Theme Museum.

The sheds happen to be re-equipped to tell the history of the Peoples' War, the cultural heritage of daily life in Great britain from 1939 to 1945. A lot of Museums merely show exhibits in cabinets and on walls and are quite dull affairs, but not Eden Camp. Authentic tableaux, with moving figures, realistic sounds and smells have been created to "transport you back in time". In a single scene there is a living area of a typical wartime residence in Britain. The household are seated in front of the hearth, listening to the radio as Chamberlain announces "the declaration of war". You start to see the man move his arm in order to fine-tune the wireless set, the woman breathes, the tin bath sits in front of a flickering fireplace and the scene comes alive.

Every single hut covers a unique aspect of the tale, starting with the rise of the Nazi Party, Hitler and the Outbreak of Warfare. Other subjects incorporate: Rationing, the Utility Scheme, ‘Save It’ Campaigns, Evacuees, Propaganda, Home Guard, Home Front, The Blitz, Air Raid and Gas Precautions, Creatures at War, The Street at War, Ladies at War, The Land Army as well as Timber Girls, The Munition Plants, The Observer Corps, The Auxiliary Fire Services, The WVS, The Red Cross, Civil Defence, The Rescue Services, The Bevin Boys, and so on.

Other sheds have already been allotted military themes - War at Sea and U-boats, LDV & The Home Guard, Bomber Command, Path Finders, RE. & RAF. Bomb Disposal, SOE, Escapers and Evaders, Resistance, Women at War, The daily life of a Prisoner of War etc.

From 1990 to 1995 a series of sheds ended up being opened, producing a "Museum within a Museum". In these sheds the military and political activities from the 2nd World War around the world are covered in great detail. Scenes such as Dunkirk, The War in the Desert, War at Sea, The Dambusters, The Great Escape, D-Day, V.E. and V.J. Days etc can easily be observed alongside with displays covering The Holocaust, The Middle East, The Far East, Italy, Europe etc. During 1992 a prefab was reconstructed on site which is a very good illustration of the post war housing efforts. Additionally a dig for victory garden has been developed and a Garden of Remembrance.

The yr 2000 experienced the refurbishment and redevelopment of Hut 13, Post-WWII Conflicts. This hut addresses all those conflicts that British army forces have been involved in globally since the conclusion of the World War 2. The hut addresses conflicts in Palestine, Cyprus, The Suez, Malaya, Korea, Kenya, Aden, The Falklands, The Gulf Conflict, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and info is being added concerning the recent conflict in Iraq.

The new Millennium additionally heralded the refurbishment and development of Hut 18, The War News Reading Room. Newspaper pages from just about every day of the war can be browsed through to see what was taking place between 1939 and 1945, whilst the media concept has been extended in order to contain different forms of communication and media presentation along with a large display of radio and telecommunications equipment spanning most of the 20th Century.

September 2001 discovered the opening of Hut 11, which takes you back to World War 1. Visitors experience exactly what life was like in the trenches, brought to life with realistic sights, sounds and smells. The 2nd part belonging to the exhibition is more of a traditional format together with text boards and display cases that contains documentation, photographs and artifacts that relate to every aspect of the Great War.

2002 marked the start of a major refurbishment of Hut 10, Prisoners of War. This venture which is now getting close to completion incorporates the wealth of materials and memorabilia that has been introduced in to the museum over the previous 17 years by ex-PoW’s, Guards and the civilians who befriended PoW’s. The exhibit addresses the lifestyle of both Allied (inside Europe and the Far East) and Axis Prisoner of War’s. It contains totally unique materials, personal encounters and stories and we believe it to be by far the most extensive of its kind in the world.

For some gentle relief, you can visit the Eden Camp Music Hall where you can sit back and watch a puppet show in which a few of the great entertainers of the period are represented. The audience is invited to participate and sing out "We'll meet again".

V1 Bomb

Being a nationally acknowledged military museum we're constantly developing relationships with many diverse military and civilian veteran organizations, organizations and old comrade clubs. This in turn has been responsible for many organizations adding their very own collections of collectibles and records with us. This has helped us to establish and develop a number of exclusive exhibitions, for example Escapers and Evaders, Human Torpedo’s, The Civil Defence and R.A.F. Bomb Disposal.

The forming of partnerships has also led to the museum hosting a large number of reunion events which allow veterans to get together and reminisce about the good (or in some cases not so good) old days. These reunions are often quite emotional, with good friends meeting up again and being reunited after, in some instances, 50 years. Our main all Services veterans’ parade occurs in September. We also host annual reunions for Escapers and Evaders (usually April - May) and veterans of Palestine (October).

The Eden Camp Chapel of Remembrance (that's located within Hut 29) has seen many Associations and regional branches of Associations incorporating a reunion with the dedicating of a memorial plaque or laying up of a Standard. At all other times the Chapel is open to allow both young and old to spend a quiet moment and reflect on all the things that they have viewed on site. It also allows families to remember loved ones that have been lost through military conflict.

As well as to the museum’s many indoor displays, we are always increasing our collection of military vehicles exhibited around the site, these include T34, Sherman and Churchill Tanks, Scammel Heavy Recovery Wagon, White M16 half-track, DUKW, a sizable collection of artillery items and full-sized replica Spitfire and Hurricane airplanes as well as a V1 Doodlebug Flying bomb. Our most recent addition is actually a gun from a British submarine. On numerous special days throughout the year, Eden Camp becomes the temporary home of a number of re-enactment teams. This permits visitors to come face to face with ‘German’ PoWs, British soldiers, an American M.P. or even the great British bobby.

Eden Camp is a Museum with a difference, it is historical, exciting and appeals to all ages and genders! There is something here for everyone.
