The Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum is about 15 miles from Whitby and around 4 miles from Saltburn. The Museum offers visitors an opportunity to discover the skills and customs that built Cleveland's Ironstone heritage. It is the only Museum in the UK which tells the story of Ironstone mining; a key part of the local history of the social and industrial development of Cleveland and Teesside.

The Museum today offers visitors an opportunity to experience the underground world of a real ironstone mine and to explore the skills, customs and life of the Cleveland miner. It was these miners that helped make Cleveland the most important Ironstone mining district in Victorian and Edwardian Britain.

One of the Museum's strengths lies in its knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides, who accompany visitors around the site:

through the discovery of rock in the area

through the cavernous ventilation spaces

into the North Drift of the old Loftus Mine

It was through this drift that much of the 6.2 million tons of ironstone extracted from Skinningrove was hauled.

Visitors have the opportunity to hear the story of a Trappy Lad on his first day at work underground in the darkness and the friends that he made there.

Finally the tour finishes with the chance to explore an underground working place and see how the stone was drilled, charged with explosives and FIRED!

While visitors are waiting for the next tour, they are able to browse the Museum Gallery. This displays photographs of Loftus Ironstone Mine (where the Museum is located), the Miners and the local area during the mining era.

The Museum is located on the site of Loftus Mine in Skinningrove, which was the first Ironstone Mine to open in Cleveland. At its peak the Ironstone Mining industry supported some 82 mines, and the annual production peaked at nearly 7 million tons.

The Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum (formerly the " Tom Leonard Mining Museum") first opened in 1982, as a result of the enthusiasm and commitment of Tom, whose dream it was to see the setting up of a Museum devoted to the memory of the Cleveland Ironstone Miners and their industry. Sadly Tom died before the Museum opened, but a dedicated group of volunteers have kept the Museum open and managed to extend the areas of the Mine operations open to visitors and also to improve the interpretation for the public.

More recently the Museum has been going from strength to strength. The Museum opened a new extension to their shop and visitor reception area in 2009, giving the museum a first floor education space in the Tom Leonard Gallery and a cinema for visitors.

The most recent improvements have also raised the profile of the Museum as a valuable local resource, and many more schools are now looking to the Museum to link with the teaching of local history.

Opening Times

Open Daily: 1st April until 31st October, Monday - Friday 10.30am until 3.30pm last tour.

Saturdays 1-3.30 last tour.

Closed: 1st November until 31st March except for school visits and special bookings

Doodlepots is a Paint Your Own Pottery, the ideal place to chill out with your friends or family, or even have a bit of quiet time by yourself. They have all the materials and expertise to help you produce your own work of art in fully-functional pottery, and you'll have fun while you do it. Pieces to paint range from small novelty items and money boxes, which the children love, to practical mugs, plates, jugs, trinket boxes etc - there are over 100 different shapes to choose from!

Cost is simple - £3.50 studio fee per painter plus the cost of whatever you choose to paint (from £2.50 - £28). There is no time limit, but the average time spent in the studio is about an hour and a half. After you've finished painting, they will glaze and fire your pottery over the next few days and then you return to collect it, or they can post it to you.

The friendly staff will give you instructions on how to get started and are on hand to give assistance should you require it.

Doodlepots

There are several painted items around the studio to inspire you, plus design books, sponges, stencils, and tools for making unlimited patterns. A projector is available, to enable you to project an image onto your pottery, which you can then paint in your chosen colours.

If you've never tried this fun, relaxing, therapeutic pastime, why not give it a go? It's great fun.

Open Monday to Saturday 10am - 5pm (closed on Wednesdays during term-time.)

Open in the evenings for groups of 8 or more by appointment.

Bark Endeavour Whitby is an impressive sight, berthed in the River Esk in the historic town of Whitby on the beautiful North Yorkshire Coast.

The authentic replica of HMS Endeavour - which was sailed by Captain James Cook during his scientific expedition of 1768 - has been traditionally built by craftsman and stands in the water some 40% of the ships original size. The 'bark' construction of steamed larch planks fastened to a solid oak frame is complemented with traditional masts and rigging, which makes the ship quite unique.

Climb on board and you will enjoy a true Captain Cook Experience... During your voyage you can sit back, relax and enjoy the views, while you hear about Captain Cook, Whitby and a whole lot more.

Choose one of the regular sailings and be taken around Whitby Harbour and along the coast to Sandsend, where you will follow the path of Cook himself and relive his life at sea.

It contains the quirkiest collection of exciting and educational hands-on exhibits in the region, suitable for both adults and children.

The Whitby Wizard stands for an important innovation within the field of museum teaching. The exhibits are both participatory and experiments. Interactive exhibits play a new role in informal education by encouraging the use of your senses of smell, touch, hearing, vision and taste.

Museums around the world are increasingly becoming aware of the importance of learning through multi-sensory experiences. North Yorkshire’s new science centre in Whitby is based on the hands-on museum tradition, which started in the USA and Canada in 1969. Truly interactive exhibits, hands-on and three dimensional, without electronic screens used just to represent true reality, provide a very useful extra dimension and balance to the school science curriculum. The Whitby Wizard cater to our in-born need to touch as we learn, and self-directed exploration of the world around us, universally accepted as being the most effective and rewarding way to learn.

For more information visit the Whitby Wizard website

The Whitby Wizard is situated on Whitby’s West Cliff next to the crazy Golf and the Paddling Pool. Car- and coach park immediately next to the science centre.

The property was bought in 1729 by the father of Captain John Walker, and became his home and place of business. He was also a captain in the merchant marine and developed the family’s shipping business. He died in 1743, and in his will (Borthwick Institute, York), divided his ships between his sons John and Henry, but left the house to them as tenants in common. The brothers allowed their mother to continue to live in the house. After the deaths of his mother and brother, John Walker moved into the house by 1755. The house remained in the family until the mid 19th century and then was used by turns as a hospital and as a private residence until rescued in 1986 to become the Captain Cook Memorial Museum.

Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey was founded in AD 657 by St Hilda and perches high above the beautiful seaside town of Whitby.

The original Anglo-Saxon monastery was destroyed during a Viking invasion in 867, and was refounded in the late 1070’s by one of William the Conqueror's knights. 150 years later the present abbey was built as the Norman church was too small for the many pilgrims who visited. The dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII in 1538 didn’t see the complete destruction of the abbey because it was, and still is, an important navigation marker used by shipping.

Access to the Abbey on foot from Whitby is via the 199 Abbey steps.
