The beach has some sandy areas but the main feature is the extensive rock reefs which are exposed at low tide. There is a dock for small boats and the bay is surrounded by some good local pubs and restaurants. There are two car parks, both at the top of the hill, this is not a beach for the unfit. There are a number of places to eat and drink in the village, along with public toilets and a museum.

However what sand there is, is clean and, according to my daughter, excellent sandcastle sand.

The main attraction of a visit to Staithes is found after a short hop over the harbour wall (steps make this an easy hop). From the base of the cliff stretching a good distance out to sea is a wave-cut platform full of rockpools and the fascinating life that dwells within. The cliffs that dominate the shoreline are a fantastic place to search for fossils, though care should be taken. As part of the "Dinosaur Coast" Staithes is very popular amongst fossil hunters and geologists.

Parking is available at the top of the hill, 5 minutes walk from the sea front. The beach is within the harbour wall, so bathing is not advised as in addition to the danger from boats, the harbour wall will trap pollutants that may be in the water.

The town has public toilets and a range of shops selling refreshments and souvenirs, in addition to a heritage centre.

The beach can also be accessed from Whitby Sands if you enjoy a brisk walk. There are public toilets near to the beach.
