Robin Hoods Bay is a  large pictuesque bay. The beach has some sandy areas but the main feature is the extensive rock reefs which are exposed at low tide. There is a dock for small boats and the bay is surrounded by some good local pubs and restaurants. There are two car parks, both at the top of the hill, this is not a beach for the unfit. There are a number of places to eat and drink in the village, along with public toilets and a museum.

Runswick Bay is a  picturesque bay with a golden sand beach popular with holidaymakers. Traditionally a haven for fishing boats the slipway is now used by the RNLI and small boats. There is a small cafe at the top of the slipway with public toilets near by. Car parking is available a short walk from the beach, though it is an uphill return.

To be honest there is very little sand here, the beach front is dominated by the harbour and seawall, and the sun takes a while to appear over the top of the cliffs. However what sand there is, is clean and, according to my daughter, excellent sandcastle sand.

The main attraction of a visit to Staithes is found after a short hop over the harbour wall (steps make this an easy hop). From the base of the cliff stretching a good distance out to sea is a wave-cut platform full of rockpools and the fascinating life that dwells within. The cliffs that dominate the shoreline are a fantastic place to search for fossils, though care should be taken. As part of the "Dinosaur Coast" Staithes is very popular amongst fossil hunters and geologists.

Parking is available at the top of the hill, 5 minutes walk from the sea front. The beach is within the harbour wall, so bathing is not advised as in addition to the danger from boats, the harbour wall will trap pollutants that may be in the water.

The town has public toilets and a range of shops selling refreshments and souvenirs, in addition to a heritage centre.

Just a short hop up the coast, Sandsend is a popular alternative to the beach at Whitby, particularly with fossil hunters. The beach varies along its length, changing from sand nearer Whitby to a pebble strewn beach closer to Sandsend itself. A small beck runs onto the beach providing a safe paddling area for young families.

The picturesque village of Sandsend doesn't have a great deal of parking within its confines, but the coastal road has been marked with parking spaces near to several flights of steps leading directly to the beach making access easy. The beach can also be accessed from Whitby Sands if you enjoy a brisk walk. There are public toilets near to the beach.

West Cliff Beach

The beautiful sandy beach at Whitby offers something for everyone: From Blue flag waters for those who like a dip, to absorbing rock pools for those intrigued by marine life; stunning cliffs full of geological history for fossil hunters and clean sandy beaches for those who just want to laze in the sunshine and catch some rays.

Chalets are available in the summer and there is a lift to carry you and your beach gear to the top of the cliffs when necessary.
